A common purchasing mistake in the HVAC replacement market is matching only the microfarad and voltage numbers on the old capacitor's label while ignoring whether the part is rated for AC or DC service. The short answer to the AC vs DC capacitor question is that AC capacitors are non-polarized and designed for continuous current reversals, while DC capacitors are polarized and fail when reverse voltage reaches their terminals. Choose the wrong family, and the capacitor can vent, bulge, or burst within days — often taking a relay or the motor start winding with it.
For distributors, technicians, and repair shops, this distinction is not an academic detail. Every fan motor, compressor, and condenser fan in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment runs on alternating current, so the replacement part must be an AC-rated motor capacitor. Understanding the construction differences, voltage interpretations, and failure modes of AC and DC capacitors prevents costly callbacks and unsafe installations.
The defining difference between AC and DC capacitors is how they handle polarity. In an AC circuit, voltage reverses direction twice per cycle — 100 or 120 times per second at 50 Hz or 60 Hz mains. A capacitor in that circuit must tolerate a complete polarity reversal on every half-cycle for its entire operating life.
Most DC capacitors are aluminum electrolytic types. They contain an anode and a cathode, with a thin oxide layer on the anode foil acting as the dielectric. That oxide layer forms and remains stable only when voltage is applied in the correct direction, which is why the case is marked with a negative terminal stripe. If the part is connected backwards or exposed to AC, the oxide layer breaks down, leakage current surges, the electrolyte heats and vaporizes, and the capacitor vents, bulges, or bursts in a very short time.
AC capacitors, by contrast, use metallized polypropylene film as the dielectric. There is no oxide layer and no electrolyte, so there is no anode or cathode to respect. The construction is symmetrical, allowing the capacitor to handle the sinusoidal reversal of AC power without stress. Film construction also gives AC capacitors a self-healing property: when a localized dielectric breakdown occurs, the metallization around the fault evaporates, and the capacitor keeps running with only a negligible loss of capacitance. This is why a quality AC run capacitor can reach 60,000 rated hours in sealed compressor duty, while a DC electrolytic capacitor in the same thermal environment would dry out long before that.
| Property | AC Capacitor | DC Capacitor |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Non-polarized | Polarized |
| Dielectric material | Metallized polypropylene film | Aluminum oxide layer with liquid or gel electrolyte |
| Voltage marking | RMS value, e.g., 250VAC, 370VAC, 450VAC | DC value, e.g., 16VDC, 400VDC, 450VDC |
| Polarity reversal | Engineered for every half-cycle | Never permitted |
| Typical role | Motor run, motor start, power factor correction | DC link smoothing, power supply filtering, energy storage |
| Common failure | Gradual capacitance loss, then bulging or leaking | Sudden short circuit, venting, or rupture |
One trap appears in the voltage column. A 450VAC capacitor is not the same as a 450VDC capacitor. The AC figure is an RMS rating, and the sine wave peaks are about 1.414 times higher. Selecting a replacement purely because the printed voltage number matches across AC and DC families is exactly how premature failures happen.
In air conditioning and refrigeration, AC capacitors perform two distinct jobs: running and starting.
Run capacitors remain permanently in the motor circuit, connected in series with the start winding. They improve starting torque, stabilize current, improve power factor, and reduce energy consumption. In residential and light commercial systems, the most common run components are CBB65 series capacitors for compressors and CBB60 motor running capacitors for condenser fans, evaporator fans, and water pumps. These parts carry ratings such as 30 µF ±5% at 450VAC and must survive continuous operation in hot outdoor cabinets.

Start capacitors are switched into the circuit only during startup. They provide a large phase shift and high starting torque, then are disconnected by a relay. The CD60 motor starting capacitor is the standard replacement in this role, built to absorb repeated short-duration current surges without overheating.

For a broader overview of capacitor functions and placement, see the main AC capacitor types used in HVAC systems.
DC capacitors are found inside power supplies, variable-frequency drives, inverters, and electronic control boards. Their jobs include smoothing rectified AC into stable DC, storing energy on the DC link bus, and filtering high-frequency noise. These roles are essential, but they exist entirely on the DC side of the system.
A DC electrolytic capacitor physically cannot run in an AC motor circuit. The first reverse half-cycle begins the dielectric breakdown process, and the component fails in a matter of minutes, sometimes dramatically. The reverse substitution — using an AC film capacitor in a DC link — is less destructive because film is non-polarized, but AC-rated parts are not optimized for the ripple currents and discharge dynamics of a DC bus, and their DC withstand voltage cannot be inferred from the AC label. Neither substitution belongs in a professional repair.
The failure modes differ, but every wrong choice ends in equipment downtime.
The professional approach is to treat AC and DC capacitor families as non-interchangeable, then match the electrical rating and physical size of the original component.
Selection comes down to five checks: circuit type, capacitance, voltage, temperature, and source quality.

Distributors and repair businesses that buy replacement capacitors in volume need consistent specifications from one shipment to the next. Ningguo Kingcool Import and Export Co., Ltd., operating under the Kingcool brand, focuses on the HVAC and refrigeration aftermarket. The capacitor line includes CBB60, CBB61, CBB65R1/R2/R3, CD60, CH85, RC-410, and SPP5/SPP6 types, covering motor run, motor start, microwave, and power-factor applications.
For compressor repair work, the CBB65R1 AC run capacitor is a direct replacement category for many residential and light commercial condensing units. When a capacitor fails in the field, the technician needs the same capacitance, voltage class, and terminal arrangement as the original. Kingcool supplies these in 250VAC and 450VAC classes with the physical formats commonly used in split-system air conditioners.
